“Where’s the amplifier remote? Which input is the projector on? Why aren’t the blinds working?”

If this sounds like your typical Friday night, you are not alone. Most home theatre setups are a fragmented disaster. As an SRE, I don’t see a relaxing evening; I see Operational Inefficiency and a complete Lack of Cohesion.

My living room in Mount Keira was a classic example. To watch a film, my family had to deal with a Single Point of Failure (SPOF): if one remote battery was dead, the system was “Down.” My mission: achieve true Reliability through Automation.

1. The Challenge: Siloed Hardware

The problem isn’t the hardware; it’s that the devices cannot talk to each other. Your TV, Denon receiver, and motorised blinds all use different, proprietary languages.

Most Wollongong TV installers can mount a screen, but they cannot create a unified “State.” At All Round Tech, we approach your home theatre like an enterprise server rack.

2. The SRE Solution: Home Assistant Centralisation

To make everything “talk,” I deployed the All Round Tech Standard: a local Home Assistant server. It acts as the orchestrator for your living room, keeping everything stable and offline.

The Hardware-Software Stack:

  • The Core: Home Assistant running locally (No cloud reliance).
  • The Projector & Amp: Controlled via Network APIs for Bank-level reliability.
  • The Blinds: Upgraded with Shelly 2.5 Smart Relays for precise Zigbee control.
  • The Trigger: A physical, wall-mounted Zigbee button for a “Screenless” experience.

3. Automation Logic: “Launch Movie Mode”

When that wall button is pressed, a complex sequence occurs in less than 2 seconds. Here is the efficiency gap between manual chaos and SRE Automation:

TaskManual EffortSRE Automation (One-Touch)
Projector & AmpLocate 2 remotes, power on, waitInstant API Command
Input SwitchingCycle through HDMI 1/2/3Forced HDMI 1 via Network
Motorised BlindsHold wall switch for 20sAutomated to 100% Closed
LightingWalk to wall, adjust dimmerSmooth 5s Dim to 15%
Total FrictionHigh (5+ Minutes)Zero (2 Seconds)

Conclusion: Engineering the Perfect Evening

The problem isn’t “too many remotes”; the problem is that home tech is too complex. By engineering a unified, localised system, we Eliminate Friction.

Modern home theatres and smart residences in the Illawarra are now as complex as small businesses. Don’t let your technology be the weak link in your Friday night.
