Multi-Layered Home Security: Beyond Just Cameras
“I have five 4K cameras, so my house is secure.”
As a NSW Security Operative Licence holder (S00021281) in Wollongong, I hear this constantly. Cameras are excellent for Reactive Investigation (seeing who broke in), but they are poor at Proactive Detection (knowing a break-in is happening or about to happen).
Cameras have blind spots. They are vulnerable to bad lighting, bad weather, and Wi-Fi interference.
In Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), we use a concept called defence in Depth. We don’t just rely on one type of monitoring; we create multiple layers. Here is how to build a truly reliable, sensor-based security network to protect your Illawarra home.
The Vulnerability: Why Cameras aren’t Enough
Based on All Round Tech internal testing, here is the performance gap between a simple camera-only setup and a professional-grade multi-layered sensor network:
| Detection Metric | Camera-Only Setup | Multi-Layered Sensor Network |
|---|---|---|
| Door/Window Status | Undetectable | Instant (Contact Sensors) |
| Glass Breakage | Poor (Audio Analysis) | Excellent (Glass Break Sensors) |
| Interior Motion | Detectable (with False Positives) | Excellent (PIR Motion Sensors) |
| Vibration (e.g., drilling) | Undetectable | Excellent (Vibration Sensors) |
| Environmental Hazards (e.g., leak/smoke) | Undetectable | Excellent (Leak/Smoke Sensors) |
| Latency | High (Cloud processing) | Zero (Localised RF/Zigbee) |
Engineering a Robust “defence in Depth” Network
At All Round Tech, we design networks using a structured, enterprise-grade architecture. We don’t just “throw up a few cameras.” We integrate a centralised nervous system:
1. Perimeter defence (VLAN 20: IoT/CCTV)
This is your “Blast Radius Control.” Even if a hacker penetrates an external sensor, they are trapped in a restricted lane.
2. Physical Layer Detection
- Contact Sensors (Doors/Windows): These are simple, localised, magnetic switches (using Zigbee/Z-Wave). If a door or window is opened, Home Assistant gets an instant, unencrypted, offline signal. Latency: < 5ms.
- Glass Break Sensors: Don’t rely on cameras “hearing” a window break. We use dedicated piezoelectric sensors to detect the specific vibration frequency of breaking glass. This triggers an alarm before the intruder is fully inside.
3. Interior Zone Observability (SRE Logic)
- PIR (Passive Infrared) Motion Sensors: We place these in non-camera zones (like hallways and offices). These are completely private, localised, and immune to Wi-Fi snooping. We prioritises reliable local storage so your footage remains yours, even if the internet goes down.
- Pressure Sensors: A “SRE Hack” is to hide a localised, pressure-sensitive mat under a doormat in a restricted area. If stepped on, it triggers an automation to “Alert and Image.”
Conclusion: Engineering a “Zero Blind Spot” Home
In the world of professional security, a camera is just one “Data Point.” True reliability comes from Correlation—when your door sensor, motion detector, and glass-break sensor all agree that an event is happening in real-time.
By engineering a multi-layered sensor network, we move from Passive Observation (watching a video later) to Active defence (detecting the threat the second it touches your perimeter).
In IT, a system crash isn’t a matter of “if,” it’s a matter of “when.” Modern home security in the Illawarra is now as complex as small business infrastructure, but most tech support only fixes the surface. I started All Round Tech to bring the same bank-level security and rock-solid reliability I’ve used for major corporations over the past 20 years directly to your home.
We don’t just install gadgets; we engineer resilient ecosystems.
