NBN 1000 Speed Optimisation: Guide for Wollongong

By Herbert @ All Round Tech
A speedometer showing 1000Mbps throttled by a generic router in a Wollongong home.

“I pay for NBN 1000, but my speed test only shows 45Mbps.”

As an SRE, I see this “Performance Degradation” every week in the Illawarra. Most people think the problem is the NBN provider (Telstra, Optus, or Aussie Broadband). In reality, the problem is usually the $0 “Free” Router that came in the box and that dusty Wi-Fi Extender plugged into the hallway.

You are effectively paying for a Ferrari (NBN 1000) but driving it through a school zone with speed bumps (Poor Local Infrastructure).

1. The “Free Router” Trap

The routers provided by most ISPs are built for cost, not for High Availability or Gigabit Throughput.

The SRE Analysis: CPU & Bufferbloat

When you have multiple devices—phones, 4K TVs, and smart home sensors—the weak CPU in a generic router starts “dropping packets.” It simply cannot process 1000Mbps of data.

The Result: You pay $120+ a month for a connection that performs like a $60 one because your “Gateway” is a bottleneck.

2. Why Wi-Fi Extenders are “Lies”

The biggest scam in home networking is the Plug-in Wi-Fi Extender.

  • The “Half-Duplex” Penalty: Most extenders repeat the signal they receive. If the extender only gets a weak 100Mbps signal from the router, it can only rebroadcast 50Mbps (half) to your device.
  • Latency Spikes: Every “hop” through an extender adds millisecond delays, which is a nightmare for gaming or Zoom calls.

3. Real-World Case Study: Mount Keira Home Audit

We recently audited a dual-storey home in Mount Keira. The owner was frustrated with “slow internet” despite having an NBN 1000 plan.

LocationNBN Plan SpeedActual Speed (Old Setup)Actual Speed (SRE Optimised)Improvement
Living Room (Near Router)1000 Mbps320 Mbps (Wi-Fi)940 Mbps (Wi-Fi 6)+193%
Bedroom 1 (via Extender)1000 Mbps38 Mbps820 Mbps (Wired Backhaul)+2057%
Home Office (Upstairs)1000 Mbps15 Mbps (Dropouts)880 Mbps (Mesh Node)+5766%

The “Waste” Calculation:

The owner was “wasting” approximately 95% of the bandwidth they were paying for in the home office. Over 12 months, they were effectively giving the ISP $700 for speed they never received.

4. Engineering the Solution: The All Round Tech Standard

At All Round Tech, we don’t believe in “boosters.” We believe in Infrastructure.

  • Wired Backhaul: Whenever possible, we run a “Backbone” of Cat6 cable to eliminate wireless interference.
  • Discrete VLANs: We isolate high-bandwidth Security Cameras from your priority work traffic.
  • Pro-Grade Hardware: We replace ISP “e-waste” with high-efficiency Mesh systems or Access Points (APs) that can actually handle Gigabit speeds.

This is bank-level reliability and rock-solid performance I’ve used for major corporations over the past 20 years, now engineered for your home.

Conclusion: Stop Subsidizing the ISPs

If you are paying for NBN 250, 500, or 1000, you deserve to feel that speed in every room. Don’t let poor hardware be the “Bottleneck” in your digital life.

In IT, a system crash isn’t a matter of “if,” it’s a matter of “when.” Don’t let your network be the weak link.
